We foster friendship, mutual understanding, and cultural pride — preserving and honoring the heritage and good name of our Mexican nationality.

Since 1937
On January 2, 1937, four Mexican immigrants came together with a shared purpose: to unite, support one another, and build a community rooted in mutual aid. Their first meeting was held at a home on Rayen Avenue, where they elected the first Executive Committee and began drafting the rules that would guide the Society.
The Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana was officially chartered by the State of Ohio in March, formalizing more than a decade of steady, grassroots growth.
One of the founders’ earliest dreams — a permanent home for meetings and cultural activities — was realized with the purchase of the building on Midland Avenue, on Youngstown’s west side.
Originally a men’s organization supported by a women’s auxiliary, the SMM evolved into a unified club in which women could hold office. In 1995 the Society elected its first woman president — a milestone in its history.
As the Society approaches its 89th anniversary, its founding goals remain at the heart of its mission — welcoming new immigrants to the region and continuing to unite, celebrate, and preserve Mexican heritage in Youngstown.
Living Tradition
SMM teaches traditional regional dances to local children in authentic costumes. Our young performers have shared the stage at the YSU Arts Festival, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and community gatherings across the region.
Every year, SMM hosts an annual Cinco de Mayo dance bringing together members, families, and friends to celebrate together as a community.
The Society hosts the La Independencia Parade each year, celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day and honoring our heritage in the streets of Youngstown.
